About…

Debbie Hendey 1 (533x515)

Welcome to my website!  Thank you for dropping in!  I’m Debbie, designer & creator of Crafty Bird Homestyles. I’ve always loved sewing and making things; stuffed teddies were my favourite when I was little -I’d make them from whatever I could find; Mum’s old tea towels, tights or whatever was in her sewing box. I cut out a big piece from my school skirt once – much to my Mum’s dismay!  Cute teddy though!

Over the last few years I really got into interior design and have completely redesigned and re-styled our house, whilst making lots of textile home accessories, soft furnishings, textile art, upholstered furniture and upcycled tables.  I started to run out of places for my makes and furniture but didnt want to stop crafting, so with encouragement from  my friends, created Crafty Bird Homestyles in Oct 2012.  My initial Facebook page, where I shared what I made – grew into a warm crowd of likers and with great feedback on my designs, I decided to start selling and created a website where people can buy my creations.

Embroidery, applique, knitting; these are some of the crafts I love to use when making cushions, doorstops, curtains, bunting etc. I love to use vintage, retro fabrics and embellishments too

I love looking at my knitting basket; especially on cold and grey days! Wool adds such brilliant colours and textures to your home, using throws, cushions or just as the balls of wool they are!

Interior design and re-styling my home is also a passion!  Its a thrill to help friends with inspiring new trends, ideas and of course bespoke textile home accessories and art!

About the Shop:

I find inspiration everywhere – the countryside, farmers markets, restaurants, trips to the beach, fashion trends, fabric shops; everywhere. I’m addicted to the feeling of excitement when I get an idea for a new project. I plan out each step in my head straight away, then set about drawing up drafts of the finished product or use personal photography to create the templates that will later be transformed into the finished work. The materials I use vary from brand new to vintage and recycled. For the applique work, I’m a bit of a womble when it comes to fabrics!  I use only the highest quality of cotton to ensure the finest finished product. When I have the pattern and materials ready, I set aside as long as I need – sometimes a few hours, other times it can take days or even weeks to finish the item. Everything is sewn and embroidered completely by hand; it really is a labour of love.
